This month we hear from trauma expert Robert Scaer, who may be familiar to readers from his 2005 book The Trauma Spectrum. Robert gives us an excerpt from his latest book 8 Keys to Brain–Body Balance and talks about how stress manifests in both body and brain, particularly in reaction to traumatic events.
Our tenth instalment of The Psychotherapist’s Essential Guide to the Brain focuses on the striatum, motivation and control. We look at the neuronal seat of motivation and how the sense of control can increase motivation. If you have ever wondered why an increase in corticostriatal network activity improves motivation, then this is an article for you!
The cover of this month’s magazine features an illustration by clinical psychologist, writer, artist, and regular contributor Terry Marks-Tarlow. Inside we’re treated to samples from Terry’s new adult colouring book Truly Mindful Coloring: Stay Calm, Reduce Stress, & Self-Express, which is grounded in science and backed by decades of clinical experience.
Our Spotlight this month is on the remarkable story of Mark and Michelle Hedges, who experienced a life-changing disappearance of Mark’s ASD symptoms as his GAPS diet began to take effect.
And The Last Word goes to Dr. Georg Northoff, who poses the question, “How do neural activity changes transform into psychopathological symptoms?”
