“First do no harm”. The article does a nice job of making that point. The physiology implied in psychotherapy sugggested is based on the autonomic nervous system. Depression and anxiety (maybe more) engage the sympathetic nervous system (fight/flight response).The first line of intervention should be engaging the parasympathetic nervous system. Strategies such as meditation/mindfullness, computer enhanced brain waves (alpha) are a couple of first line initiatives that may recalabrate the brain to, “peaceful”, parasympathetic operation. In psychotherapy the client must feel safe to explore. The most beneficial state is in the parasympathetic nervous system.
