Neural plasticity, which describes the capacity of our nervous system to respond and adapt to experience, is a fundamental principle of neuropsychotherapy. This month, Dr. Haley Peckham introduces neuroplasticity as the new paradigm for understanding and treating mental health issues, from both a philosophical and a scienti c perspective. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Dr. Peckham and also respected therapist and neuroscience educator Richard Hill to our advisory board. I have worked closely with both talented and generous individuals since the foundation of The Neuropsychotherapist project and am grateful for the much support and professional wisdom they have lent to this publication.

For couples therapists we have a special treat from Stan Tatkin, who shares his Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy (PACT) in How Couples Change. Working with couples is challenging  as there can be a lot going on at once in sessions with troubled partners, and to be effective we need a solid framework to guide therapy. Stanís PACT is just such a framework, providing the means to understand and work with couples and to keep you, the therapist, oriented.

Gail Noppe-Brandon makes a welcome return on the subject of narratology, elaborating how this approach can help people make sense of their lives. Gail draws on her extensive experience with narrative therapies and the use of memory reconsolidation to bring about understanding, healing and a way forward for hurting clients.

Neuralplasticity: A new paradigm for understanding and treating mental health issues.

Dr. Haley Peckham introduces neuroplasticity as a new paradigm for understanding and treating mental health issues. At its simplest, neuroplasticity refers to the adaptive capacity of neural systems – the ability of the brain to be meaningfully biologically changed by experience. In this article Dr. Peckham considers the philosophy and science behind this important understanding.
