As the psalmist once said, we are “fearfully and wonderfully made”. How true that is when we consider the immense complexity of the brain—and its beauty. I know no one who captures that beauty as dramatically and as accurately as Dr. Greg Dunn, who is both neuroscientist and artist. This month we are taken inside the process Greg and Dr. Brian Edwards, an applied physicist, used to create Self Reflected, a microetching of a cross-section of the brain rendered in fascinating detail and featuring clever animation with light.

We’re also pleased to feature “It’s Not the Stress You Feel, It’s the Stress You Don’t”, from Kyle Davies’ recent book The Intelligent Body. Reiterating for us the deep connection between mind, body, and emotions, Davies re-examines chronic symptoms of ill health  from the perspective of the stressors of life, and suggests what we can do about it. His accessible style and insights are suitable not only for clinicians but for clients too.

You may note the absence of The Psychotherapist’s Essential Guide to the Brain this month, as we take a break from our popular series while we busily revise and collate the magazine instalments for an upcoming handy reference volume.

Finally this month we present a brief review of apps for clinicians and clients dealing with conditions like depression and PTSD. New apps are coming onto the market all the time, and I hope that this article will encourage you to see what’s available in your area of therapy. On the clinical practice front, we hear from Kate Hudgins, who explains the therapeutic spiral model of experiential psychotherapy.

As always, I do hope you enjoy our offerings this month.

Art of the Brain

Greg Dunn steps us through the process of creating Self Reflected – a micro etching of the brain like you have never seen before. The science and the art of representing neural networks is beautifully expressed in this amazing piece of work by neuroscientist Greg Dunn and applied physicist Brain Edwards.

It’s Not the Stress You Feel, It’s the Stress You Don’t

Kyle Davies talks about lifestyle stressors and how these impact our physical wellbeing. Bringing home to us the bio-psycho-social connection Davies explains how life stressors can quietly take a toll on our health and wellbeing, how to recognise it, and what to do about it.
