One thing I always ask my clients is how they are sleeping. This apparently nondescript activity takes up about a third of our lives and is vitally important, not only to our physical well-being but to mental fitness. The wonders of our daily biological rhythm, and in particular the processes that occur while we sleep, are the focus of our first feature article this month, “Rhythms, Sleep, and Dreams”, by David Presti. An expert in biological science and psychology, Dr. Presti is the author of Foundational Concepts in Neuroscience: A Brain–Mind Odyssey. Complementing his article this issue is the latest news on developments in sleep research.
Also this month, staff editor Haley Peckham shares with us her experience of the recently attended 2016 Childhood Trauma Conference in Melbourne, Australia. Fresh from her encounter with luminaries such as Allan Schore, Pat Ogden, Stephen Porges, Ed Tronick and Dan Siegel, to name just a few, Haley brings a rich offering of highlights from this important gathering. She says, “It was an inspiring and rejuvenating experience. I was richly fed with evocative and emotional storytelling, which gave me goose bumps, and state-of-the-art discoveries in neurobiology that sent shivers throughout my autonomic nervous system.” I hope that some of the experience will rub off on readers! Haley’s report continues in next month’s issue.
Continuing the theme of fear and anxiety from last month, our sixth instalment of The Psychotherapist’s Essential Guide to the Brain looks at anxiety from top-down and bottom-up perspectives as well as a left-/right-hemisphere perspective and how these understandings should inform our therapeutic approach. It is my hope, for those readers starting out on this journey of discovering how neuroscience can inform clinical practice, that these brief guides will give shape to the wonderfully complex system that underpins our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.
