Welcome to the third edition of The Neuropsychotherapist.  What an amazing time we live in!  Space, it seems, was not the final frontier after all.  Across the board, scientific knowledge has been advancing at near warp speed, and attempting to keep abreast of it all is a task of epic proportions.  As home to this magazine, The Neuropsychotherapist website also hosts its open-access journal partner the International Journal of Neuropsychotherapy, which takes its place amongst the family of human science journals as a home for scholarly articles exploring new frontiers in the meeting of the neurobiological sciences and psychotherapy.  We hope that this initiative will make keeping abreast of our niche in the world of science and clinical practice a little easier.  Thanks are in order to Dr. Pieter Rossouw for taking up the position of Chief Editor for the journal.  His passion and knowledge of neuropsychotherapy are an inspiration.

In this issue, Dr. Mona Fishbane, director of the couple therapy training program at the Chicago Center for Family Health, introduces us to key concepts involved in our innate biological need for connection.  “Wired to Connect” is excerpted from her new book, Loving with the Brain in Mind, written to help therapists understand relationships, development and change from a neurobiological perspective.

In keeping with the relationship theme, Dr. Arlene Montgomery takes us through an interaction between a therapist and her supervisor, analysed from a brain-based perspective.  Arlene does a wonderful job of navigating the discourse between client, therapist, and supervisor, highlighting the neurobiological processes in play throughout these interactions.  This informative article takes us “behind the scenes” of mechanisms such as projective identification, transference, and countertransference that we all deal with in our clinical practice.

Caryn Talty and I present insights and some first-hand experience in a must-read overview of the haemoglobin metabolic disorder known as pyrrole disorder.  This chronically underdiagnosed condition has significant ramifications for mental health as well as physical well-being.  Never heard of pyrrole disorder?  Don’t be surprised, as many health professionals are unaware of the condition, which can be easily diagnosed and treated with supplemental vitamins and minerals.  I am particularly keen to see practising therapists become aware of this disorder and the ease with which it can be screened for if you have a client presenting with some of the signs and symptoms.

Dr. Jonathan Baylin, author of the popular book Brain-Based Parenting: The Neuroscience of Caregiving for Healthy Attachment, contributes an article on cutting-edge research into behavioural epigenetics and attachment.  Baylin explains what causes our genes to express in a certain way, how this is adaptive, and how can we change genes back to more positively adaptive states later in life.  This is a fascinating field of research and one with huge implications for the future of psychotherapy.

Later this issue we also examine a case study of depression, taking the approach of coherence therapy within the larger framework of neuropsychotherapy.  This is a pragmatic attempt to show what the neuropsychotherapeutic perspective is all about, and how closely it is aligned with the implicit memory reconsolidation work of Bruce Ecker.

Finally we share a lively conversation between David Van Nuys (“Dr. Dave”) and Louis Cozolino.  Louis talks about the neuroscience of psychotherapy, a subject in which he has been a trailblazer for many years.

I do hope you enjoy our collection of articles and columns in this quarter’s magazine, and please connect with us through comments online.
