Recently I gave a talk on the close association between the brain networks that process physical pain and those that process social–emotional pain. The metaphors we use to describe social–emotional pain—“I got stabbed in the back,” “She broke my heart,” and so on—borrow heavily from the physical, and this trait seems to be universal across cultures and languages. I was making the point that we should be gentle with one another on the social–emotional plane in communities we are nurturing, because pain in this area is perceived no less tangibly than physical pain. Ironically, after my talk, I received a “cutting” review that was supposed to be constructive criticism but felt like a character “assassination” that “tore me to shreds”—it hurt. This month we delve into the neural networks responsible for such feelings, in the eighth instalment of The Psychotherapist’s Essential Guide to the Brain.
We are honoured over these next two issues to feature sex addiction expert Alexandra Katehakis in a two-part series entitled “Sexual Addiction: Holistic Treatment Goals and Protocols for Body, Brain, and Relationship”, drawn from her brand new volume for Norton due out this month. Alex takes us through some of the neurobiological complexities of sex addiction and offers a psychobiological approach to treatment as a useful framework from which to work. Many of the principles she expounds are highly relevant for other addictions and for psychotherapy in general.
This month we also feature our good friend and philosopher Georg Northoff as interviewed by David Van Nuys, in “Exploring Neuro-Philosophy”. Finally, The Last Word goes to our editor and popular speaker Richard Hill on the mind–gut connection and staying responsive to new ideas.
Please don’t forget to join us in our forum space online, where we can share about these and other topics relevant to your practice in mental health.
