Clinical intuition is an open, receptive mode of being with and relating to others. In order to tap into the deepest intuitive levels, you must first prepare the way by cultivating spacious states of mind. This article is devoted to the important step of clearing out mental blocks to expand inner space and freedom. As a start, consider the words of Viktor Frankl: “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lie our growth and our freedom” (as cited in Pattakos, 2008, p. ix).

In referring to a “space” between stimulus and response, Frankl doesn’t mean the literal external space that comprises the sky. He refers to a metaphorical kind of subjective space or room in which we can gather our internal faculties and self-reflect. Inner space grants us freedom to find the unique subjectively based truths from which attuned responses and wise clinical choices emerge….
