The often destructive results of marital unfaithfulness provide a primary presenting problem in couple therapy (Peluso, 2007; Subotnik & Harris, 1999) and can be a major factor leading to separation (Brown, 1999). Infidelity can erode the connection, trust and intimacy that forms the foundation for a strong and healthy relationship, and partners can struggle to trust and recover from the pain and loss of a breached contract. There are unique treatment issues that therapists need to be mindful of as they work with couples at such a delicate place in their journey (Hertlein, Wetchler & Piercy, 2005). This manual will give you a brief overview of infidelity and then an empirically validated therapeutic process you can use as a guide when working with this particular issue. The guide is constructed primarily from emotionally focused therapy (EFT) interventions while incorporating elements of cognitive-behavioral couple therapy (CBCT) and other empirically supported treatments for relationship distress.
